Chandler-Gilbert Community College’s newsletter "Connection" published on its August 2008 issue a Non-resident Student Advisory.
The text of the note is as follows:
Students are asked to take note of Arizona Revised Statute ARS15-798, which states “it is unlawful for any non-resident student to register concurrently in two or more public institutions of higher education in this state, including any university, college, or community college for a combined student credit hour enrollment of seven semester hours or more without payment of non-resident tuition at one of such institutions”.
The Maricopa Community College District runs periodic reports to asses the higher tuition rate as required by that stature.
Out of state tuition less than 7 credits=$96.00 per credit hour.

Luis Avila, from El Break Productions, and Carmen Cornejo
El Break Productions, a group of young professional Hispanic and media entrepreneurs in the Phoenix Metro area recognized Carmen Cornejo as the Activist of the Year 2008 for her work with the undocumented students and the promotion of the legislative proposal known as the DREAM act with the organization CADENA. The award was presented during the Stylos Award, an event that combined music from local bands, a fashion show and Awards to notable groups and persons in the Phoenix area in a blend of music, culture and activism.
Stylos award took place on Saturday, August 16th at the Old Brick House in downtown Phoenix.
“I dedicate this award to the student graduated from ASU who can’t go to post-graduate school; to Virginia a 4.0 GPA student who endured 3 days in a cell with 35 women and was deceived to sign voluntary deportation; to Joe an ROTC member who died in Mexico after he was “medically deported” by St. Joseph Hospital; to all the students who still have hope that this country will do the right thing and reward hard work and determination; to CADENA members and my family” said Carmen Cornejo.

CADENA is a grass roots organization of concerned citizens who educate the community about the situation of the undocumented students and promotes the passage of the DREAM act. Carmen Cornejo volunteers with CADENA full time.
"Every year we recognize as “Activist of the Year” a person that shows real passion and determination toward the cause he or she is promoting. This year, the only person that came to our mind was Carmen Cornejo. Her efforts in trying to get the Dream Act passed in Congress and in helping the students maintain their strength and dignity despite the obstacles that may come their way are truly remarkable and we are honored that she is accepting our award“, said Nuvia Enriquez, El Break Production member and MC of the event.
“This award is a recognition by young leaders on the need to implement the DREAM act. The DREAM act will give the students freedom and remove the terrible fear of deportation and mistreatment by immigration authorities. The USA needs the talents of students who work hard for achieving excellence in education and given the opportunity, will contribute with their taxes to the well being of the nation”, Ms Cornejo said. “It’s a win-win situation“.
El Break broadcasts every week a bilingual Spanish-English radio show with news and information for young audiences. You can hear them at 95.1 FM "Latino Vibe" every Sunday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. This group of creative students and professionals have been recognized by the publication New Times as the best bilingual radio show in the Phoenix Metro area.

In mid-August, Virginia , an '07 honors graduate from North High School , was deported following a routine traffic stop. While in custody, Virginia was subjected to inhumane treatment, without any legal representation.
After her arrest and subsequent four-day stay in a holding cell, Virginia signed a voluntary deportation order and was taken, by bus, to Nogales , where she was left without any concern for her well being.
Virginia was awarded numerous scholarships to attend ASU. She wanted to be a nurse and looked forward to making a meaningful contribution to our community.
From Mexico , she now describes her situation as follows:
"I had my family. I worked really, really hard to get my scholarships. I was proud of myself. I was happy. I had everything, school, and then I was working. I was with my family so when they told me I was going to be deported, I felt like I was losing everything... for a tiny error, for a tiny mistake, I was losing everything.
I was here for nine years and I worked really hard to get to this point and just for a tiny, tiny little mistake, I lost everything, my school, my scholarships, my job, and I was feeling really bad....
I couldn't think about coming to Mexico because I was thinking that the thing that most hurt me was, first of all, my family. To be separated from them, because we are a close family. We are always together.... But the other thing that really, really hurt me was my school because I was thinking that I came here when I was nine years and then I learned English and I put my best effort to get good grades and graduate from high school with a 4.2 GPA and then I got scholarships and I participated in sports and community activities.... For my dreams to come true. And then just in a second, they flew away....
It really hurt me, because I couldn't believe it. I was thinking, my school, no...."
The DREAM Act was created for students like Virginia and therefore the robot for the 2007-08 FIRST Robotics season is named
Virginia 's DREAM
In honor of the the hard work and dedication to be the best you can be in the face of adversity that Virginia exemplified.
